JCC Speaker Lunch: “Understanding the World of Misinformation and Misbeliefs”

Program Description: Prof. Dan Ariely, Duke University “Understanding the World of Misinformation and Misbeliefs” One can look at misinformation and misbeliefs as simply mistakes, but in reality they are psychological responses to feelings of deprivation. In his presentation Dan analyzes conditions leading people to lose faith in logical views of the world and begin looking for alternative views, which only result in further levels of misbelief. How can people return to the reality of facts? There are some things we can do to mitigate the damage. Dan Ariely, professor of Psychology & Behavioral Economics at Duke University, is dedicated to helping people live more sensible – if not rational – lives. He is a founding member of the Center for Advanced Hindsight and co-creator of the documentary film “(Dis)Honesty: The Truth About Lies.” Dr Ariely is a three-time New York Times bestselling author; his books include Predictably Irrational; The Honest Truth About Dishonesty; Irrationally Yours and his latest book, Misbelief, published in 2023.
