Science on Tap

We’re exploring the space where science and culture intersect, and we’re doing it over drinks.
Grab a brew (or root-brew!) and meet us online OR onsite. This Carpenter lecture series features some of the best minds in science. From the sensation of being hugged by an octopus to quantum mechanics, Science on Tap looks to answer questions you never knew you had!
Our Ancient Lakes
Most lakes are less than 15,000 years old and short-lived, but a much smaller number of ancient lakes, often millions of years old, are scattered across every continent but Antarctica. Comparable to coral reefs or tropical rainforests, these lakes are often filled with a diversity of creatures found nowhere else in the world.
Taking a refreshingly personal and accessible approach, Jeffrey McKinnon will introduce the remarkable living diversity of these aquatic bodies and explain the surprising, often controversial, findings that the study of their faunas is yielding about the formation and persistence of species. Hear about the lakes’ geological origins, evolutionary processes, interspecies mating, and the future of these lakes.
About the Speaker
Jeffrey McKinnon received his BSc from the University of British Columbia and his PhD from Harvard University. A Professor of Biology at East Carolina University, his research has taken him to every continent but Antarctica and has appeared in journals including Nature and The American Naturalist.
