Before moving pictures, the magic lantern was often used for entertainment, projecting images onto screens or walls. Artist and writer Emma Straus will discuss the history and technology of the magic lantern and present her short story-turned-magic-lantern-show, Whalebones, which takes readers to the seaside cottage of Jeanne and Cordelia, where the women wait for whales to wash up on the beach, so that they may give the majestic creatures their “last rites”, by slowly and carefully collecting blubber and baleen for corsets they themselves will never get to wear.
